From The Administration Series Part One - Mind Fuck by Manna Francis
Sex, food, torture, conspiracy, and family gatherings - more than just a dark dystopia. (Science fiction murder mystery, 20000 word excerpt, ADULT CONTENT: explicit sex, issues of consent.)
CHAPTER ONE
The interrogation room was brightly lit and relentlessly white, and had a disinfectant smell that Toreth no longer even noticed. The guards had already delivered the prisoner by the time he arrived; the man sat at the small square table, on a plain metal chair screwed securely to the floor.
"Good afternoon." Toreth liked the little irony, although it wasn't often appreciated.
The prisoner looked up from his contemplation of the tabletop. He looked very much as he had at their brief meeting earlier, which was to say sullen, angry, and frightened. Toreth stood, impassive, letting his height and the breadth of his shoulders kick off the process of intimidation.
From THE ADRIEN ENGLISH MYSTERIES by Josh Lanyon. Contains the first two novels in the Adrien English series: Fatal Shadows and A Dangerous Thing.
FATAL SHADOWS - Los Angeles bookseller and aspiring mystery author Adrien English opens his front door to murder. His old high school buddy (and employee) has been found stabbed to death in a back alley following a loud and very public argument with Adrien the previous evening.
A DANGEROUS THING - In this second LA-based adventure, bookseller Adrien English arrives at the Pine Shadow Ranch (left to him by a beloved grandmother) to find a corpse in his driveway. But by the time the unfriendly local sheriffs arrive, the body has disappeared.
CHAPTER ONE
Cops before breakfast. Before coffee even. As if Mondays weren't bad enough.
I stumbled downstairs, unlocked the glass front doors, shoved back the ornate security gate, and let them in: two plainclothes detectives.
They identified themselves with a show of badges. Detective Chan was older, a little paunchy, a little rumpled, smelling of Old Spice and cigarettes as he brushed by me. The other one, Detective Riordan, was big and blonde, with a neo-Nazi haircut and tawny eyes. Actually I had no idea what color his eyes were, but they were intent and unblinking, as though waiting for a sign of activity from the mouse hole.
“I'm afraid we have some bad news for you, Mr. English,” Detective Chan said, as I started down the aisle of books towards my office.

From AMONG THE LIVING by Jordan Castillo Price ... PSYCOP #1 - Victor Bayne, the psychic half a PsyCop team, is a gay medium who’s more concerned with flying under the radar than in making waves. He hooks up with handsome Jacob Marks, a non-psychic (or “Stiff”) from an adjacent precinct at his ex-partner’s retirement party and it seems like his dubious luck has taken a turn for the better. But then a serial killer surfaces who can change his appearance to match any witness’ idea of the world’s hottest guy. Solving murders is a snap when you can ask the victims whodunit, but this killer’s not leaving any spirits behind. (Paranormal; 13000 word excerpt; NC-17, graphic sexual content)
CHAPTER ONE
Once upon a time if you told doctors you heard voices, they’d diagnose you as schizophrenic, put you on heavy drugs, and lock you away in a cozy state institution to keep you from hurting yourself or others.
Nowadays they test you first to see if you’re psychic.
From AQUAMARINE by Mel Keegan ... Meet the Aquarian, Eric Devlin, and Dr. Russel Grant on a beach in the tropics as a cyclone approaches the floating city of Pacifica. (Science fiction; 2400 word excerpt; MA15+ rating; no reader warnings).
The Aquarian was engrossed in the work and did not notice as Russell stood. Perched on his boulder, he was bronze-skinned and still bare. He had tied on a sweat band to keep his hair out of his eyes as the wind rose and he began to concentrate on the screen, but otherwise he was gloriously naked. The juxtaposition of the animal and the academic — the computer and the long, glistening bare limbs — never failed to woo and excite Russell, but for the moment he was sated. He only feasted his eyes for several minutes before he began to repack the frij and drop the sunshade.
"Are you anywhere near finished, Eric?" he called up the beach. "Going to have to leave soon — see the sky!" Read more...

From BEST UNSPOKEN by Bryl R. Tyne ...There are those who seldom speak, and those who never stop. Sometimes it's not what we say that means so much...
Twenty-five year old, social butterfly, Levi Finley couldn't be more mismatched for his middle-aged, introverted counterpart, head biomedical tech, Rob Langston. What happens when two, so utterly opposite men come together? Besides the hottest sex in Levi's young life? Throw in one opinionated mother, misunderstanding friends, and one hell of a birthday party at the wildest, gentlemen's gentlemen club in town, and friction, a notch above wild, is bound to ensue. Will Levi allow doubts to destroy their relationship? Not if Rob has any say in the matter. But that might not be as easy as it sounds, considering Rob hates wasting words. (Contemporary; 618 word excerpt; NC-17; Reader Warning: intense sexual content)
I pushed my plate forward and my chair back, wasn't hungry anyway. "Thanks for the birthday dinner, Mom. It was great."
Arm fighting my suit jacket, I bent and kissed her cheek. She stared over her plate, chewing slowly.
"I'll drop by next week sometime, okay?" I hesitated at the back door. No need to wait for a reply though; I wouldn't get one.

From BLUE SKYE by Viki Lyn ... After years apart, two childhood friends are reunited - but lives change, people make choices... Will they find a common ground for friendship, will Skye settle for less than love, and will Drew face his greatest fear?
The crates loomed like a bad omen. How could inert objects cause such a crazy flutter in his stomach? It felt like thousands wings were hitting the inside of his gut. Drew rubbed at the annoying throb at the back of his neck. Packed inside the crates were paintings by the exhibiting artist, Skye Taylor, that name invoked a foreboding gloom around his heart.
Skye was in town, which meant Drew would have to see him. How could he ignore the exhibiting artist when he had designed the gallery? The owner expected him to attend opening night.
Before he could think of any more reasons to get the hell out of town, the bell chimed announcing a customer. Drew jerked his head around and his heart skipped a two-step. Read more...

From BONES OF SUMMER, THE by Anne Brooke ... Craig Robertson, young actor and model, begins a relationship with PI Paul Maloney at the same time as his religious fanatic father mysteriously disappears. Trying to discover the truth brings more to light than Craig anticipated. Can his new relationship with Paul survive the revelations of his own past? (Contemporary romantic thriller; 2650 word extract; MA15+ rating; READER WARNING: ADULT CONTENT).
The evening Paul finally rang him, it had been the last thing Craig expected. He’d spent a rough day out on a modeling shoot, trying to look sultry and continental in a boat on the Thames in the middle of December. The rain had been pissing down and the makeup girl had to redo him every five minutes.
He didn’t complain though. It was hard enough getting a job at all, without screwing it so he didn’t get hired again. Word soon got around in this town. Not like where he was brought up, where secrets could be hidden for a lifetime sometimes. Read more ...

From Bottled Up by Andrew Grey... Contemporary, MA rating. “Thank you.” Sean smiled and handed the older lady her purchase. “That cabernet should go perfectly with the beef.” His smile was returned as she took the bag. “You’re welcome, young man, and I appreciate the help. Your manager must be very pleased with your work.” She walked toward the front door and Sean shook his head, smiling to himself. His boss was indeed pleased with his job performance. He’d better be, since he was the boss. The front door burst open and Katie raced into the store, huffing. “Sean! I heard shouts from the alley. I think someone’s in trouble.” Sean’s heart began to pump faster. “Call the police and watch the store.” The words were barely out of his mouth and he was out the door running around the side of the building. He could hear a scuffle coming from the back of his store, curses, and even what sounded like pleading. Sean raced around the corner of the building and stopped, sliding a little on the ice before coming to a complete stop. More... |
From BREAKHEART by Mel Keegan ... On a winter's day in a season so cold, so hard, that survival is far from certain for men and beasts alike, the chance meeting of two young men will change the destiny of both. (Fantasy; 1975 word excerpt; MA15+ rating; no reader warnings).
Even the wolves were starving that winter. The wind screaming out of the north cut with a knife’s edge, and only desperate men made the journey to Breakheart. For the first time in the memory of even the oldest men of Brennan’s rath, the River Cador was a ribbon of black ice. Serpent-like, it wound down from Spelling High Water, in the cleft of the Osrand Mountains, and the ice did not even begin to break up until it reached the city of Moorkind, which was once my home. In spring the lowlands would surely be flooded, one did not need to be a member of the Guild of Seers to know this.
I had been at Brennan's rath — Breakheart, as all who lived there soon came to know it — for a month under two years, and I would be there five years more. The time stretched before me like a field of desolation and I had begun to feel the weight of the fetters that bound me. They were not physical fetters, but they were shackles nonetheless. I was bound to Breakheart as surely as if I were chained like a bear. Only fools tried to leave alone, and no one would take me out. Read more...

From CROSSROADS by Keta Diablo ... Handsome ex-cop Frank McGuire is on a quest to locate his dead partner's missing son. Rand Brennan has an identity issue, exercabated since the death of his father. Hoping to find himself, Rand drops out of college, takes to the streets, and doesn't realize he's embroiled in duplicity and murder. In order to save Rand, Frank must confront the nefarious killers and...confront his long-suppressed feelings for Rand. (Contemporary; crime; strong R rating. ADULT CONTENT WARNING: intense sexual activity, strong language, dubious consent; 2750-word excerpt.)
The outline of a body appeared under the doorway and a voice, calm and icy. “I’ll ask the questions this time. Don’t move a muscle, don’t even flinch. I might mistakenly blow your head off.”
“Rand.” His name left Frank’s lips on a whisper.
“Hello, Frank McGuire. It took me a while to figure it out. Then it all came back, the eyes, the voice.” Rand walked forward and put the gun to Frank’s head. “In case you’re wondering, it’s loaded, and I must confess I’ve never shot a gun before. If I were you, I wouldn’t so much as blink.” Read more...

From CROSSROADS REVISITED by Keta Diablo ... Frank McGuire is beginning to think the City has become a melting pot for serial killers. Another maniac is stalking the streets, only this time the deviant isn't tracking Goth girls, but gay college students. Rumors surface that put Frank's life in jeopardy, and somehow he must protect Rand from the carnage about to unfold. What he didn't count on was Rand becoming the killer's next victim.(Contemporary; crime; R rating. ADULT CONTENT WARNING: intense sexual activity, strong language; 2000-word excerpt.)
Frank knew he was in over his head when it came to Rand, but the time had passed for recriminations and told-you-sos. The kid was beautiful, plain and simple, with the most delectable body, the most taut, provocative ass he’d ever seen. He’d been the first one to fuck that virgin bottom and the thought of someone else even touching Rand made him want to seek the unknown person out and kill him.
He drew a deep breath. In his field, people killed for three reasons: sex, money, and love. Truth might as well have arrived in the form of a dull butcher knife. Christ, he’d fallen in love with Rand. Read More...
From DANGEROUS MAN, A by Anne Brooke ... Michael Jones, a young gay artist and part-time prostitute, will do anything to stage his first exhibition. When he falls in love with rich financier, Jack Hutchinson, he seems set to achieve his goal. But as Mikey becomes caught between the unforgiving territory of smoky-bar Hackney and the green-garden luxury of upper class London, we witness the intense mindscape of a man obsessed with his dreams as he attempts to free himself of his past. When a net of antagonistic relationships and inner battles encroaches upon him, the consequences of Mikey’s uncompromising pursuit emerge in thrilling tragedy, leaving him having to fight for all he holds dear, and in the only way he knows how. (Contemporary psychological thriller; 2060 word extract; MA15+ rating; READER WARNING: ADULT THEMES).
Late as usual, I’d clattered along the magnolia hallway of our overcrowded flat, finding Paul still in the kitchen. He gave me a dirty grin from next to the dishwasher, which wasn’t surprising since I’d spent a couple of hours the previous night giving him a good time. I’d then spent fifteen minutes that morning trying to shower the smell of it off my skin. Not one of my best decisions ever, but it kept the rent low. Joe, our landlord and Paul’s lover, wasn’t there, of course. He was out wheeling and dealing with a load of artie types in Italy, lucky bastard, but if he knew what went on he’d … he’d … well, I didn’t know what he’d do but it wouldn’t be good ... From THE DECEIVERS by Mel Keegan ... In the 1860s steam and sail are technologies at war, and nowhere is the struggle more fierce than in Europe's coastal waters. Jim Hale and Bill Ryan are caught between past and future, and double-damned, since their world has no place for men who love men. (Historical; 2425 word excerpt; MA15+ rating; no reader warnings).
They ate in companionable silence, each busy with his own thoughts, saying nothing, though Ryan watched Jim for some time. He could almost hear the click and whir of cogs and gears as Jim chewed through Tremayne’s proposition. Even now, Joel could take Ryan by surprise. This interest in industry, the railroad, was something he had not heard before — probably an inspiration right out of an American newspaper.
A long time later Ryan checked his pocket watch as he leaned back in his chair, comfortably full and for the moment relaxed. The sun had angled down; late afternoon shadows wreathed the quay and the clouds which had been gathering since morning had begun to pile up like a mountain range on the horizon.
"I’ll be at sea again in a few days," Ryan said quietly. Jim merely nodded. He knew the schedule as well as Ryan. "The Orkneys, Montrose, Dunbar and home."
"And then the Skagerak run, Trondheim ..." Jim gave a sigh. "Sometimes I do envy you." Read More...

From DRAWN TOGETHER by Z.A. Maxfield
Rory might just be a simple southern boy from St. Antoine's Parish Louisiana, but he knows what he wants. He's been in love with the girl of his dreams, reclusive and mysterious artist Ran Yamane, since junior high school. And now he has the chance to meet her. He's going to chuck everything and travel 1,500 miles to Anime Expo in Long Beach to tell her, and no one and nothing is going to stand in his way.
Ran Yamane is not a girl, but he gets that a lot. People come to him with teddy bears and chocolates and disappointment by the truckload. He's trusted fans in the past and been tragically wrong. So when he meets Rory he's understandably wary, but resigned. What he's not prepared for is his magnetic attraction to the young man, Rory's apparent willingness to overlook his gender, and the fact that their lives are both thrown into chaos when his number one fan (and psycho stalker) shows up to get revenge.
CHAPTER ONE
Rory stood tapping his foot in line behind about a hundred others who wanted an autograph from the singular Ran Yamane. His trip to California and the complete dedication it required to drive fifteen hundred miles in three days made it the first opportunity he had to relax and just enjoy the pleasant sensation of inertia.
In fact, in the fragrant, floral-scented bubble of space he was occupying, Rory took immense pleasure in imagining the moment when he would first see his idol. He imagined her shy surprise, and perhaps her humble acceptance of his floral tribute. From there, he would ask her to autograph his book and then his line drawing from eBay.
Rory was certain she would remark on his accent, because thirty or forty minutes away from the bayou simply everyone did. While it made an excellent icebreaker, he didn't like the way people thought it made him slow. On the other hand, it never failed to interest women, whether they thought he was slow or not.
