As the header bar on the site says -- we're the only specifically GLBT Community for writers, artists, publishers, reviewers, booksellers -- and readers! Loads of other Communities have sprung up all over the web, and are flourishing. But "gay and lesbian" is always a corner of these communities, as if we're carefully filed away where gay books can't be confused with (one hesitates to say this!) "real books." Mel Keegan ran into this situation once too often ... and then the "AmazonFail" debacle happened. And GLBT Bookshelf was born.
We're a Community with like interests: a passion for GLBT books, a desire to sell a great many copies, give up the day job, "turn pro" in this industry and enjoy the results for many years. To these ends, we're ALL here to pool knowledge, share hot tips and "writer beware" items -- and to get together in Community projects. See below!
And unlike a majority of other writers' community groups, you're not only allowed to sell your books on your own pages right here -- you're encouraged to! Please DO paste in your affiliate links. Make your pages fully-featured, with embedded cover shots, video trailers, sample chapters ... and "buy now" buttons for Amazon, Smashwords, Diesel, Payloadz -- wherever your books are available.
Selling your books here? Go for it! If your books are on Amazon, and if you don't have an affilliate account ... well, get one! It's simple to sign up, and you can be selling your own books right here in half an hour. What do you get out of selling your books here? You get the sale, which is tracked by your publisher, who pays your royalties. You also get the Amazon referral fee. You get additional exposure in the marketplace by being here: potential readers who were looking for Mel Keegan stumbled over Josh Lanyon ... or, they were looking for Josh Lanyon and stumbled over Alex Beecroft.
There's an old saying: what goes around, comes arouond.
All members of this Community (this means you!) promote the heck out of GLTB Bookshelf. We ALL send our readers, followers, friends, customers, whatever, HERE. When readers are here, they'll browse around, pick up some freebies (sample chapters and free short stories: go ahead and link to anything you want). They'll have a great browsing experience; they'll return; and the next time they're shopping for a GLTB took, bet your bottom dollar some of them will start here!
We're a "collective," where the whole group promotes the whole group, and everyone gets the benefit of the shared customer traffic.
Next step: Collective Advertising. Say...what?
In fact, we're going to take this one step further: we're a kibbutz ... and there's strength in numbers! One of those strengths is about everyone dropping their loose change in "the hat" when it's passed around. We'll be launching Campaigns for the benefit of all members -- what's a Campaign? An advertising campaign. It might cost $100 to "buy" 20,000 targeted visitors to this site ... that's 20,000 potential customers. (This is where you pay for the click-through, the visitor.) That could mean 200 books sold, with even a 1% "conversion." Or 400 books sold, if 2% of our visitors made a purchase. Nice! But who's going to put up the hundred bucks? Well, being a Community, we all do. Members will get an email with a link to a page on which is a PayPal button for a $1 contribution. No one pays more than a dollar or two (in the early days when there are only 50 members, obvioulsy it's going to be $2 each to raise the hundred), but everyone gets the benefit of 20,000 book-buying visitors, and a crack at that 2% "conversion. If 2% of visitors bought a book, that's 400 books sold, with 50 writers benefiting. Scare up eight sales (eight potentially loyal readers who'll be back for your next book!) for one dollar.
Community. Embrace the concept!
For the whole poop, see the Terms of Service -- which is NOT a legal document (yet; let's keep it friendly as long as we can).
Why do we use Amazon links and widgets, when we deplore the whole Amazon Fail situation?
There's method in our madness ... bear with us! The wiki has an Amazon affiliate account. When you shop for virtually anything from Amazon, starting from any link from a Carousel or a widget like the one right above, the Bookshelf earns 4% of the sale. These dollars are turned around and invested in wiki advertising -- to grow and strengthen our community. Eventually, with 10x the members and 10x the "gene pool" of creativity, drive, even buying power, we won't need Amazon, Google or any of the big engines any longer. We can, and will, be completely self-reliant. And wouldn't it be "poetic justice" if the funding to achieve prosperity and self reliance for the GLBT literature community were to be tapped from Amazon itself? So don't hesitate: if you're going to shop via Amazon, start on one of our widgets, because 4% of your purchases are invested in securing the sweetest revenge possible: success!
