Excerpt from Best Unspoken by Bryl R. Tyne
I pushed my plate forward and my chair back, wasn't hungry anyway. "Thanks for the birthday dinner, Mom. It was great."
Arm fighting my suit jacket, I bent and kissed her cheek. She stared over her plate, chewing slowly.
"I'll drop by next week sometime, okay?" I hesitated at the back door. No need to wait for a reply though; I wouldn't get one.
* * * * *
Stuck in traffic, I waited for the light to change. Why does she have to be this way? I smacked the steering wheel. My mom wasn't that bad, not really. She had her opinions. Some, she'd never consider changing. One, a major one-she didn't like Rob. The light turned green and I gunned the engine.
"Levi, he's twice your age."
"No he isn't."
Forty-four was not twice twenty-five. My first steady relationship, we'd been together over two years-but that wasn't good enough for Mom. Not even the fact Rob had one kick-ass job-head technician at the University's Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences department, which paid sixty-thou-plus a year-softened her stance against him a little. But I didn't have the heart to tell her I'd moved in with Rob four months ago.
"I don't understand. He never says more than three words to me, Levi. I worry about you."
"We get along just fine, Mom."
See, I was from a family of communicators. To be more accurate, we talked--a lot. Except for my sister, Stacy; she escaped the constant banter plugged into her music. Mom hated not being heard. If you didn't respond, well, she just knew you hadn't been listening. That's why she didn't like my boyfriend. Rob's introverted. He's shy. Guys like him have a hard time making small talk, and with Mom's never-ending chatter, Rob was ever lucky to get a word in edgewise.
I pulled into our garage alongside his Beamer and cut the engine. The kitchen door stood ajar. Rob appeared in the doorway as I hit the steps. Dressed in a crisp shirt, silk necktie, and his most expensive slacks, he leaned on the jamb, arms crossed, glaring.
"Hey, babe. Stopped at Mom's for birthday dinner." From the bottom step, I stretched up to kiss his cheek. Christ, I love the smell of his skin after he shaves. I could do him right here. I'd bend him over the hood of his car and . . . I'm running late.
He pressed against me as I tried pushing past. Hungry already? "Sorry. Just let me grab a clean shirt."
As usual, he followed, watching my every move. That's just his thing, you know-to watch. Turns him on. "Like what you see, huh?" I buttoned down my collar and fixed my tie.
He smiled, his gaze trailing the length of my body. I grinned back, despite my mother's haunt sparking like a bad flint at the edges of my mind. "I'm ready."
As I took his hand, he captured my mouth and pulled me into an embrace. I snorted, ending the passion before it started. Forehead creased, head tilted to one side, he gave me a questioning look.
"Babe. Wait ‘til you've had a drink or two. You know your toothpaste makes me gag." He wrapped me in his arms and nuzzled my neck.
Christ, that aftershave again. Licking just under his earlobe and nibbling, I whispered. "Talk to me, Rob. Tell me what you want."
He kissed my neck as he cupped my ass and pressed his impressive bulge into my hip. I enjoyed the rough slide. But he still didn't speak. Why I expected a break from the norm, I didn't know. "Come on, babe. Let's go party."
